About the New York Knicks

The New York Knicks are an American professional basketball team based in New York City.  Knicks is short for their official nickname Knickerbockers.  The Knicks have won two National Basketball Association (NBA) championships (1970 and 1973). They are one of the most lucrative franchises in professional basketball.

The New York Knicks team was originated in 1946 as part of the Basketball Association of America which later became the NBA in 1949.  For the first nine seasons of play, the Knicks had winning records and advanced to the NBA finals three consecutive years (1951-53); though, they lost each one of the times. However, for the rest of the decade and into the 1960s, the Knicks displayed poor performances, but this all changed when the franchise drafted centre Willis Reed in 1964.

1969-70 Season-Season to Remember in NBA History

In the 1964-65 season, Reed earned NBA’s Rookie of the Year. For almost a decade, Reed led the Knicks to regular postseason berths before his retirement in 1974.  Coach Red Holzman led the Knicks to their first title at the close of the 1969-70 season with the help of four future Hall of Famers: Reed, Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley, and Dave DeBusschere.  That year was one to remember in NBA history, since games three and four were decided in overtime, and the seventh and deciding game against the Los Angeles Lakers highlighted an injured Reed. Limping onto the court at Madison Square Garden, Reed was welcomed by a loud home crowd but was not able to score more than the first two baskets of the game, nevertheless, he inspired his teammates to win their first NBA championship.  These two teams battled in the finals two more times in the next three years, thus causing a heated rivalry between the Lakers and the Knicks.  In 1973, the Knicks won another NBA championship.

Knicks Known for Their Tough Defense

During the 1980s, the Knicks had a mix of success where they had six playoff appearances; though, they came in short and did not participate in the NBA Finals.  Then in the 1990s, their playoff-level was led by future Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing. This period was well known by the passionate rivalries with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat.  The team was known for their tough defense under the head coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy. The Knicks managed to make two appearances in the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999, but they were unsuccessful in winning the championships the two times. Since then, the Knicks have struggled to recapture their former glory but the team won its first division in 19 years during the 2012-13 season. The team was led by a core of forwards Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. Unfortunately, the team was eliminated in the Eastern Conference semi-finals by the Indian Pacers, and have failed to make an appearance in the playoffs since.
