    Dallas Mavericks Timeline

The team struggled the first few seasons in the NBA; nevertheless, they revealed their first winning season and gained a play-off berth on their fourth year with the young stars: Mark Aguirre, Derek Harper, and Rolando Blackman.  The Dallas Mavericks continued to infiltrate its team roster with good talent through the mid-1980s; consequently, they qualified for the postseason five consecutive years from 1983-84 season to the 1987-88 season, including a berth in the Western Conference finals in 1988.  A few years later, the Mavericks lost many of the team star players in either trades or via free agency; therefore, the team fell into an extended period of futility for the following decade.

Nonetheless, the Mavericks’ managed a turnaround with the addition of point guard Steve Nash and forward Dirk Nowitzki before the 1998-99 season.  In the year 2000, Mark Cuban purchase the franchise and a new era for the Mavericks launched. This new outspoken owner upgraded the team’s facilities and made Dallas an attractive commercial location.  Don Nelson, head coach and general manager of the Mavericks, supervised the recruiting of quality high-powered offenses led by Nash, Nowitzki, and Michael Finley.  In the first decade of the 21st century, the Mavericks were one of the top teams in the Western Conference. In spite of Nash leaving Dallas in 2004, the team made it to the first NBA finals berth in team history in 2006, when they came in short to the Miami Heat in six games.  They had the best regular-season record in the NBA in 2006-2007; nonetheless, they encountered play-off disappointment when Dallas became the

“first top-seeded team to lose a seven-game series to an eighth-seeded team, the Golden State Warriors”. The Mavericks team was one of the NBA’s better teams through the end of the 21st century and in 2009-10; thus, they ranked fourth in the league history to post 10 consecutive season of at least 50 victories. In 2010-11, once again the Mavericks made the NBA finals to defeat the Miami Heat and obtain their first NBA championship. The 2012-13 season brought an end to the Mavericks 12-year play-off streak; nonetheless, the team recovered the following season to win 49 games and confirm a postseason berth. They managed to qualify to the play-offs over the next two seasons but the team did not advance past the first round in all three appearances.  The Dallas Mavericks posted its first losing record in the 2016-17 season after 17 seasons.

Though, as of December 12, 2018, the Dallas Mavericks had won 11 straight games at home. Currently, Luka Doncic is the center of attention--“It was a no-brainer”: How Luka Doncic won over the entire Dallas Mavericks organization long before the NBA draft.  He has validated the years of research, recruitment and the hard work of the scouting staff.  As Carlisle said, “That guy’s good, and we’re not sure what position he is, but he is going to be an impact player in the NBA, for sure, you’re never sure how quickly he’ll have a major impact, but you could tell he was good.”  The question was How good?  “Donnie Nelson was the one who thought he was going to be exceptionally good, and exceptionally good early.” Carlisle said.
